The award-winning East Beach is a stone’s throw from Harbour Park. It hosts a safe and sandy beach, trendy promenade and large picnic greens. This beach is widely regarded as the most family-friendly, safe beach on the south coast in West Sussex; patrolled by lifeguards in summer months, this beach has regularly won awards from the UK and Europe.
Access to West Beach and its sand dunes is via a footbridge on the riverside towards the town centre. This area is part of a nature reserve and is a site of special scientific interest, which has national protection. This beach is generally quieter and includes sand flats, shingle and one of only three sand dune systems in West Sussex.
From the quaint lighthouse on the East Pier, if you turn around and head inland down the re-developed riverfront promenade, there is a pleasant walk to be had. Views of the river, the marina and, in the distance, Arundel and the South Downs National Park provide interest for all the family. Look out for the resident swans and other wildlife as well!
The East Pier sits where the River Arun meets the sea, and is the perfect place to spend some quiet time on a hot summer’s day. Relax and enjoy the view of both the beach and river and if you’re feeling a tad sleepy, then there is nothing stopping you having a little snooze, as many locals do.
